Grondstoffenkolonialisme

Daar moeten we mee ophouden. Het is tijd om de economie te ecologiseren en dat kan alleen als we overstappen naar een circulaire economie en mondiaal grondstoffenmanagement.”

Thomas Rau speaks about ®turntoo in Dutch media

Thomas Rau was recently invited by Dutch business news radio ‘BNR Nieuwsradio’ and Eigen Huis magazine to talk about the ®turntoo concept and performance-based consumption. In both interviews he explains why ®turntoo is a practical solution to deal with the increasing shortage of raw materials, what benefits ®turntoo has to offer to consumers and why manufacturers are very keen to co-operate in this initiative.

®turntoo on German television

Yesterday, German public television ARD showed a report on ®turntoo and Cradle to Cradle in the building industry. Thomas Rau and Michael Braungart explain the benefits of performance-based consumption – for the consumer, the manufacturer and the environment. The RAU studio and Hof van Coevorden are shown as examplary projects for this new approach. The TV team also visited Desso flooring and Daas baksteen, both companies which are currently transforming their businesses to fully meet Cradle to Cradle and performance-based criteria in the near future.

Forget property, performance is what counts

“The idea that products are the property of consumers no longer holds true. As a consumer, I am only interested in how a product performs, not whether or not I can own it. Sufficient light, comfortable seating, a good audiovisual set-up – those are the main things. From now on, we will be consuming on the basis of product performance,” according to Thomas Rau.

Rau launched ®turntoo, a platform that turns around the relationship between producers and consumers. ®turntoo advocates performance-based consumption: a fundamental change in our current consumer society and the associated profitability models.

“In the ®turntoo model, the manufacturers retain ownership of their own products. Consumers only pay for the performance, rather than for the raw materials that went into the product. As a result, innovation accelerates and using environmentally friendly products becomes considerably cheaper for consumers. Because the product goes back to the manufacturer after a set period of use, the consumer no longer has to be responsible for disposing of the product. Everyone is responsible for their own actions.”

In times when raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce, it is in the best interests of manufacturers to continue to own those resources.  Their products, no matter what the size, now become storage banks for source materials, providing temporary storage for precious elements. Designing a product based on Cradle to Cradle principles makes it easy for the rare elements used in that product to be reused for a new generation of products. The producer becomes less dependent on the market for natural resources and increases economic security for the future.

®turntoo also goes beyond the traditional lease constructions that in no way facilitate the recycling of rare elements. In the ®turntoo model, the product and the raw materials it contains return to the producer at the end of the contract; ®turntoo completes the cycle of recycling.

This service-based concept will be developed in cooperation with our partners.
